Nisus Writer Express 2.1.1
Reviewed by: Jim Strickland, Sun Jan 16 2005
Once a year, I participate in a minor insanity called National Novel Writing Month, or NANOWRIMO. This year, my weapon of choice to pump out a 50,000 word novel was Nisus Writer Express 2.1.
It handled the massive document with aplomb, even when reformatting the whole thing and running spell checking and thesaris on the fly. It's a light weight, well designed, easy to use and efficient word processor that ran as well on my G3 powerbook as it does on my dual G5 - important during NANO when you need a change of venue before you loose your mind. In all the month of November, during this period of heavy use, Nisus Writer Express was completely reliable.
Of particular interest to me is that instead of having a proprietary format for documents, Nisus Writer Express's native file type is RTF, which any recent word processor can read and write. Additionally it will read and write Microsoft Word files, as well as a host of other types, though not including AppleWorks.
I highly recommend Nisus Writer Express 2.1.1 (the current version) for documents of any size.

I've been using a demo version of NSX for the last week and love it. Especially when I've watched my older MS Word files self-corrupt, a problem that seems common enough when I googled it up. I mean, poems and articles and chapeters I wrote in the 1990s and haven't touched since just got all kinds of wierd characters and became "executable files," wierd stuff. So I've got to switch, and Nisus seems like the next best thing.
