A true life-saver for handheld users
Reviewed by: Kevin Harrison, Sun Jan 16 2005
When palmOne announced that they were no longer going to develop Palm Desktop for Mac, I wasn't worried. That's because I knew Mark/Space had a superior product already.
The Missing Sync is a wonderful app for anyone who owns a PalmOS handheld. It allows you to sync your handheld with the major iApps, including iCal, iTunes and iPhoto, plus Address Book. You can mount your handheld's SD/MMC cards as a regular drive volume and drag & drop files straight to it. Plus, it features AvantGo synching, via USB or Bluetooth, so you can keep up on your news even though AvantGo themselves do not support Mac sync.
However, no app is flawless. Sometimes, after synchronizing, the software no longer 'talks' to the handheld until you restart your Mac. AvantGo synching is slow via Bluetooth, and I have not yet successfully got the program to sync via USB (though the upcoming 4.0.3 supposedly fixes that). Finally, you must have a handheld running PalmOS 4.0 or higher... which means I can no longer sync my old Handspring Visor Deluxe at all, since palmOne no longer offers a Mac Palm Desktop download. It flawlessly handles my new Tapwave Zodiac, though, so I can't complain too much!
Overall, The Missing Sync is a great app and well worth the money. If you have an older handheld, this isn't for you. Anyone with a PalmOS 4.0 or higher model, though, should pick this up without hesitating. It really is the best way to keep your data synchronized to a Mac.
