My office settled on AoI for doing architectural renderings, because its rendering engine is superior to almost all others available on the Mac, including some costing thosands of dollars! Since then, I've also gained a great appreciation for all of the other features of this *very* full-featured program.

Art of Illusion

Art of Illusion is an amazing, very versatile 3d app! I have used TrueSpace and Blender and they are great programs, but AOI is so easy to use! It is written entirely in Java, but that doesn't mean it is slow. On an AMD K-6/700 I get reasonable render times, and the editing is flutter free. Using Java Media (JMF) you can save your animations directly to Quicktime format. No need for a suite of converters. AOI imports Wavefront objects and exports Wavefront, VRML and POV Ray 3.5. I have used AOI 1.9 and now 2.0; I'll keep Blender around, but my primary tool is now AOI. Download it, try a couple of the tutorials, and you won't be disappointed.
