Memtest Publisher's Description:
This small command-line utility thoroughly checks available memory under OS X. Memtest is licensed under the Gnu Public License and is distributed with source code. This program was originally authored by Charles Cazabon for Linux platforms and the MacOS X port is maintained and enhanced by Tony Scaminaci.
What's new in this version:
Version 4.2 adds
* - a new Linear PRN test which fills the entire test space with non-repeating pseudorandom data
* - an intelligent command-line parser to reduce dependence on the order of command-line arguments
* - reporting of the total execution time.
Memtest OS X is distributed as a universal binary that runs on all PPC and Intel-based Macs and can be downloaded for a minimal fee of US $1.39.

Dusty: open firmware

hold down apple-option-O-F during the boot sequence. But if it does not make the startup chime, that means it failed the POST, and as far as I'm concerned, that means it's a boat anchor. google open firmware to find out what you can do there.

Author now charges for downloads from official site, I am mirroring for free

I paid the $0.99 to download this GPL'd software. It is legal under the GPL to charge a reasonable amount to cover the cost of distribution. I took this encrypted DMG file, mounted it with the password I paid for, and zipped up all of the contents unchanged, and I am hosting it free of charge at http://www.deepthought.org/~dcooper/memtest-414.zip
Enjoy!
