can't boot Yahoo messenger 2.5.3 with osx 10.3.8, Tue Mar 01 2005

Older versions used to work but 2.5.3 doesn't. There's a thread on macfixitforums about this. Yahoo should upgrade this if they want to recruit mac users.

Piece of Garbage! (YM for Mac), Sat Feb 26 2005
Reviewed By: Tom

Yahoo Messenger
When Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 2.5.3 first came out I was so excited because I could use my webcam with OSX. But then suddenly I noticed one little thing...When I used the old version for OS9, I was able to transfer files to and from Window's users. But I could never get this to work with this version. All of my friends who have Yahoo! Messenger for Windows keep asking me if I can see their photo in the chat window and I say "what photo, where is it supposed to be?". They then think that my version is a very old version and that I need to update it. But the Mac OSX version 2.5.3 is the latest update and has been for about 4 years now. You'd think this is rediculous since the Window's users get frequent updates. They have IMvironments and I love those...but its not available in version 2.5.3 for Mac OSX. Plus they get games, avatars, a lot more emoticons and voice chat. Yes, they get Voice+Video chats and all we get is Video with no sound at all. Most webcams come with microphones these days as well. Also, there is so tech support for Mac users. There is limited help documentation on it. Frequently there are connection problems, freezes, and crashes very often. Plus sometimes the video sometimes stops working in the middle of a chat. You can't get support from Yahoo!. You write to them and they send out the same response to everyone. They say something in the way of them recognizing the demand for Mac support and they are working on it. But they have been using this same response for 4 YEARS!!! I speculate that Microsoft is giving them a large sum of funding and has had Yahoo! fire all of their Mac tech support. So, in my opinion if you have plans to get this program...I hope you will reconsider it and get something else. Its not worth your time and headache to bother with downloading this one.

Yahoo's cross-platform support is the best, Mon Feb 07 2005
Reviewed By: Joel Natividad

Even though it still trails the Windows implementation, the Mac version is still eminently usable and implements all the major features.
My main IM on the Mac is iChat, what with its Rendezvous support and ability to chat with AOL.
If I have to chat with my yahoo messengered friends, I fire this baby up.
And when I must, I grudgingly still use the severely feature-limited, MSN Messenger :(

Yahoo Messenger, Mon Sep 12 2005

Well - Changes Have Happened
Okay here we go. I have been always happy with Yahoo Messenger until 2005 because MSN was so pathetic. Yahoo was the only messenger to allow me to see other’s cams and that was a bonus. I too have written to Yahoo about the problems and get back that useless reply thanking me and saying how friendly they are to Macs. Really!!

Yesterday, quite by accident I found the new version if MSN just released around Sept 2005 that allows you to have your own pic on display and other features, but no webcam. I must say that I am impressed with the new MSN Messenger 5.0.0 even though it lacks the quality Windows users have. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=msnmessenger

Tonight I discovered the “new” Yahoo Messenger 2.5.3 which was also the name of the one for several years!! I was over the moon when I read what it would do. You must all look at this and see that it is labelled Step 1 then Step2 then Step 3. http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.php;_ylt=AuNMJQgYLTRUcEJu._AfzLKPyckF Click on “Take the tour” in the top right. The Yahoo page is woeful. It pretends to be for Max OS but is in fact all that the Windows version has. All those features are in “Actions” which is a Menu bar item for the Windows version.

It has improved though. You seem to now have the ability to use webcams but I don’t have one so can’t prove it. You can now file transfer and you can still see other webcams I think better. I still have to do more searching to see what may be extra.

Recently I was introduced to Adium. What an interesting chat program. You can bring together all your contacts on MSN and Yahoo and AIM and others and can have them all on display. You must see. www.adium.com

Okay so a new interface and a limp attempt to support mac users while omitting chat room access etc? Yahoo! really stepped up to the plate with this "client upgrade" ... not.
