Sigma Chess is my favorite Mac OS/X chess program, and I own them all. It has the nicest looking chess pieces, it stores my chess games for me to study, annotates them for me, prints them in two-column form with color diagrams, and displays games I download from the Web. And all of this is free!

This latest release now supports 6 plugin chess engines (3 are free) so I have more variety in my sparring partners, and can get a "second opinion" on my games.

The HIARCS engine (demo version included) is the strongest chess program available for the Mac (HIARCS running on a handheld PalmPilot tied a two-game match with a grandmaster today). HIARCS does cost money for the full-strength version, but I happily paid it to get my games annotated by a grandmaster-strength program.

I've used Sigma Chess since version 4.0. There are features it does not have - if you want more tutorial material, you can try the commercial program Chessmaster 9000. If you want to play other people over the Internet, Sigma Chess won't do that ... yet.
